Big-box retail and solar
Big-box retailers may be the ideal customer for solar energy. Kohls and Macy’s are two examples. Kohl’s has already installed solar on 45 stores and Macy’s on 18 stores. Both plan to double solar capacity this year. For many reasons, solar is a very good fit for big-box retailers:
- Scalable potential for energy growth and savings in the form of many large flat roofs.
If Walmart eventually covered the roofs of all its Sam’s Club and Walmart locations with solar panels, figures from the company show that the resulting solar acreage would roughly equal the size of Manhattan, an island of 23 square miles.

- Energy requirements that vary from significant to extremely demanding.
- Purchase decision (relative to KW involved) typically vested in a small group of people.
- Retail business mindset that showcasing green awareness (e.g. a roof of solar panels) is good PR and can improve top line and bottom line numbers.
